Your Thoughts?

“In matters that are so obscure and far beyond our vision,” Augustine wrote, “we find in Holy Scripture passages which can be interpreted in very different ways without prejudice to the faith we have received. In such cases, we should not rush in headlong and so firmly take our stand on one side that, if further progress in the search for truth justly undermines this position, we too fall with it.”

I’m curious…what do you think?

I agree with Augustine. If the Bible seems silent or vague, then we cannot help but have our own opinion, but that opinion should be a humble one realizing that we could very likely be wrong.

I also in recent weeks have become convicted of being too arrogant in my ability to correctly understand scripture causing me to do a 180 in my previous beliefs that everyone must come to their own conclusions and hold to that. I am starting to submit to the idea that the Holy Spirit may not guide an individual into proper understanding but he will guide the church as a whole into proper understanding if the body of Christ seeks it humbly. Therefore an individual cannot hope to completely understand the Bible on their own without the help of the church.
